What Is My Decorating Style?

While we are playing the "closing waiting game", I've been trying to work on a partial idea board for the guest bath downstairs.  Still keeping the ol' fingers crossed that we close on this house, so I don't want to get too far ahead of myself.

It is a half bath and a bit on the small side.  The room is narrow, with the sink and commode being opposite each other and not a lot of acreage in between.  No, you can't brush your teeth while using the commode, but it is a tight space. "D*mn, we're in a tight spot." (O Brother, Where Are Thou?)  Hey, I like movie line quotes!

When I saw this room, I knew it would be the first room to get a make over.  While we were looking at the house, I was telling the hubster changes I wanted to make, courtesy of my Pinterest boards.  He rolled his eyes....so far back that I thought he was going to faint!  "It is brand new, why do you want to change it?"  "For the same reason you want new tools!"  But you readers all know the reason...because I want our decorating style to be reflected in our new home.  I want to make it ours...but not so much that someone else will not want it in the future! :-)

So this brings that age-old question....what is my decorating style?  I have no idea!  For me, trying to determine my "decorating style" is much like a round of "Who's on First?"  And when that get's old, it turns into "what came first, the chicken or the egg?"

If I were Miss Moneybags, I would hire a decorator to do all of this gut-wrenching decision-making for me.  Lucky for you I don't have mucha moolah, because that means over the next few weeks we will be playing games and having adventures trying to discover my decorating style and how to decorate the new house (hey, I have to write something and you have to read something while we pack and move).  We all know that misery loves company, so you can suffer right along with me! I know, too many clichés, right?

So now that you've seen what I will be working with, start thinking of some ideas or share some of your links with me on Pinterest!  The above idea board is not mine, obviously.  Don't get all excited because my idea board will look nothing like this...you've seen my craft projects!!  Two rules the hubster has thrown down...no changing the floor and STRICT budget....what a party pooper!

Stay tuned for the idea board!

Happy Monday and cooler temps here in Nashville!

    1. I love Pottery Barn. It is one of my favorite stores and I would live in the back if they would let me! :-) I think it will be fun also and you are right, decorating on a budget is quite fun! I forces you to look at things in a whole new light! Have a great day!

  3. It's funny when my husband's friends tell him they have Pinterest boards to show their cutomers, to get a feel of what they are looking for. I told him it is a very valuable tool for him to use, and in the long run, it may solve him time, that is, except when he's working with a decorator and that's a whole other story, oh man!! He rolls his eyes back too! It all looks very beautiful, I love it all, the chrome, the white tile, the vanity! You know I'll be here to follow along. Can't wait to get started! Have a fun week!

    1. Thank you so much Christine! I will probably change my mind 7 more times by the time I finally pull my idea board together...LOL. Pinterest boards do help solve so many problems and for me, give me a clear direction of where I really want to be and what will work for me. I think it's great that some of the men using them with their customers! I can only imagine what it is like to work with a true decorator...it's all I can do to work with myself...LOL! Thank you again and have a great week! Hugs!! :-)

  4. Why does there have to be such a thing as a budget? Dang...what a downer! I like the white tiles in this inspiration board, Benita. It all looks very classic so it wouldn't go out of style any time soon. Good luck on closing on the house!

    1. I know, right?!! If it weren't for the budget, this half bath would look so much nicer than any plan I could come up with! :-) I'm wanting to stay with something that is not too terribly trendy so that it will be appealing to the next buyer. Thanks so much Julie! We've already been postponed to the end of the month....UGH!

  6. Guess what? I don't like the reality of having a decorator "do" my living space. Oh yes, it would be easier. And probably look like a magazine spread. Because, after all, they are decorators.

But. I like my living space, to be what I want. And what he wants too, of course. :-) Happily, we agree, so that makes it nice.

Anyway, no possible pouts, over not having the "moooooola"* for a decorator. Just you have fun with making everything, into purrrrrrrrrrrrrfection, for the two of you.

*Does anyone say "moooooola" any more?!? -grin-

And best wishes with the agonizing time of the "closing waiting game"!!!

    Waiting time hugs,
    Tessa

    1. LOL….The decorator and I would come to blows over some fabric choices and then someone would film it and then it would be all over YouTube and then the hubster would never be able to show his face in public….so it’s just as well I can’t afford it.  I too enjoy picking out my decorating pieces. The hubster and I have opposing views on décor…he’s good with cardboard and bricks, me, not so much…LOL…so he leaves it up to me.

Probably no one but me ever uses that word, but it is good lip exercise. ;-) Today we found out we will be pushed out 2 more weeks on closing…and so it begins….

      Hugs!!

    1. LMAO....you are killing me....LOL If the hubster reads this, he will go back and get a red chair he found and cut a hole in the bottom of it to put in place of the commode!

  8. This is going to be so much fun, Benita! I'm already wondering what your board will include. How is packing coming along?

:-( Packing isn’t happening right now. We found out today that closing is going to be pushed out until the end of the month. We decided to wait until we have something a little more concrete on closing before we actually start putting our life in boxes. We are still doing the walk through this week though. Love to you too Dewena! Hugs!!

  9. Benita,
Just surround yourself with what you love and it will be perfect. I have gone with trends and other's ideas to just end up changing things to what feels comfy to me. That is the best advise just go with what you love.

    1. Thanks so much Kris, I couldn't agree more! And that is pretty much what I have now. While I like some of the trendier things, I know they just won't fit for us in our home. I have an eclectic mix of things in the house...IKEA sofas, empty frames on the walls, rustic crates, vintage scales, some of my b/w photography hanging around, photo ledges and a little mid-century modern and French provincial pieces. I love them all and that's what makes our home unique for us! :-)

  10. I do like that sink...some shelves that hubs makes with his new tools above the commode or little shelves from the thrift store, ditto for a basket or two to hang with some dried flowers inside..a picture or two....you can fill up the walls rather cheaply I think :)

    1. I really like the idea of shelving and having some "pretties" would give it a little more visual interest! And definitely yes on some drive flowers. I've been eyeing some pictures as well, since there is so much empty wall space. It has a pretty tall ceiling. I like pedestal sinks, but wanted a cabinet in here for some storage...there is not a lot of storage space in this house. Thank you so much Deb...I like the way you think! :-)

  11. Benita,
Trust me, you'll be glad to find your own style, even if it means a few disjointed decisions along the way. When I married my husband and moved into his home (literally, my whole house contents fit, and then some), he had had a decorator years before. I am still trying to rid that stamp of the decorator's doing in this house. I've pretty much succeeded, but it took a good 10 years to where he didn't notice the subtle changes. Then, all of a sudden, he saw a house full of different stuff!

    1. LOL @ 10 years…that was a true labor of love Rita! Every house we’ve lived in has been different, so I’ve had to adjust along the way to the different style of house. Fortunately, the new house style is not a lot different than the style of our rental, so hopefully the transition will go smoothly. I want to make some changes to the “contractor grade” things that are there so that it feels more comfortable and home-y for us. It will definitely be a work in process and a lot of trial and error! :-)

  12. Fun! How about a funky, large print wallpaper? My mother did that in a small bathroom in a house we lived in when I was in high school.....circa 70's! It was wild, and I never forgot it!!

    1. You know, I've been tossing around some wallpaper ideas. I've seen some of the large prints like you are talking about and they are so pretty and different. If I choose one, I will have to do a lot of fast talking and empty promises to get the hubster on board...he hates wallpaper. :-)

  13. I read on some blogger's post awhile back that to find your style, you need to make a board that has only everything you absolutely love and write why you love the pin on it. My two boards Beautiful rooms and Inspiration are full of just that... exactly what I love. Although I've slacked on the writing why part LOL

    Maybe that'll help :)

    1. That is great advice! I have looked over my Pinterest boards and I seem to be all over the place, but what I have found in looking back at how I decorate my house is that I'm a little trendy but like a lot of "clean lines" with some vintage/rustic mixed in. Okay, now I'm more confused...LOL I will give it a try! Hugs and thank you!!

  14. Oops! I forgot to add that doing that will tell you your true style just by seeing them all together.

Not enough coffee in me yet LOL
