It's All Fun and Games....

....until someone breaks an ornament!

I recently read an article in The Tennessee Magazine about Christmas safety.  I know it sounds bizarre, but every year there are so many accidents involving lights, trees and ornaments.  If your children don't behave like this.....

....then I think you might be pretty safe in the ornament department....well, unless you have small children or pets who like to remove your ornaments.

While there are less fragile ornaments made nowadays, we still have those that we've saved that are sentimental and extremely fragile.  To keep them safe, place those ornaments that are precious and breakable on the higher branches.  Keeping them higher on the tree ensures they do not fall into the wrong hands.....or paws.  Spending quality time in the ER because kids or pets have had an extra little snack should not be on the "holiday to do" list!

Make sure your Christmas lights have that little "UL-approved" tag on them.  Also, keep your lights out of the mouths of kiddos and pets and don't overload your extension cords...or else...

Again, not a good Christmas memory.  And this is a given, never leave a lit candle near your tree or decorations...even if the tree is artificial.  The hubster is a fire investigator and has many a story to share about candles, trees, craft supplies and decorations.

One other thing to remember....be careful ripping open those gifts so that you don't get a paper cut.  I knew a girl who got a paper cut from opening gifts Christmas morning, went out that day and inadvertently picked up a strain of strep bacteria from a door handle and lost a finger! Please practice holiday safety!

A little side note:  yesterday I mentioned that I had tried eggnog for the very first time ever on Monday evening and fell in love with it.  I can't vouch for any other brand than the one I bought, Southern Comfort, but all I can say is that it is soooo good (non-alcoholic, of course).

As a matter of fact, it has become one of my 4 major food groups:  M&M's, Oreos, Eggnog and Nachos, kicking candy canes straight to the curb!  I bought 4 cartons Tuesday and only have 1/2 carton left...and the hubster is out-of-town.  Did I also mention that I'm a little lactose intolerant?  Just a little...

  3. Very informative post! My son needed stitches one year from a shattered glass ornament! They are dangerous...but oh so pretty! One of our family's Holiday traditions is Eggnog with brandy for the adults...Again, my son could drink a whole half gallon by himself....I'm good with one glass...there is like a billion calories in one cup!!! Hugs

    1. One of our guys worked a fire last week....the lady left her hot glue gun next to her crafts....they lost everything in that fire....so sad! Bless his heart...but yes, the glass ornaments are pretty! Honey, what I've been drinking has no alcohol but does have all those calories...omgosh...it is so wonderful! That's what I want for Christmas...eggnog with no calories...LOL Hugs!!

  4. So funny. Love Christmas Vacation it is my all time fave movie. I am getting the eggnog to try. Sounds really good. Not only ornaments with animals. A few years ago I spent Christmas Day in the Vet Emergency because the two basset hounds ate two boxes of Godiva Chocolates that were under the tree wrapped while we were at Church. I might add that was a couple of very expensive boxes of chocolates after the ER Vet bill. They were both fine but Oh my the bill to take care of that with them!!!! I learned the cocoa in the good chocolates is life threatening to dogs. Lesson learned! Have a great Friday my friend.

    1. Christmas Vacation is hilarious! I’ve already seen it like 12 times this year…LOL

Oh no!!!! How horrible….poor little doggies! And yes, Godiva is so wonderful but so expensive!! I had no idea cocoa was dangerous to animals…wow. So now, ornaments and chocolates hang towards the top of the tree! :-) Hope you have a fabulous weekend sweet friend…love and hugs!!

  5. Benita, you're so cute!! Seriously, you NEVER tried eggnog??? Where have you been, lady? I like mine spiked and with a good sprinkle of nutmeg. It's usually our tradition on Tree Decorating Day that when we are all done and sit down to admire it we enjoy a spiked eggnog. Yummmmm!!

    1. Seriously...LOL. And I've been under that rock with you, remember?? You should have been passing me some eggnog... LOL I will have to try it with a tiny bit of rum to see what it tastes like. All I know is that I'm in love with this stuff...which is really bad for my thighs!! It is delicious!!

  6. Oh my gosh, Benita, eggnog is one of those guilty pleasures that makes life worth living :) And the calories and sugar don't count during the holidays, right? During December I have at least one or two Starbucks eggnog lattes per week. The sugar purge begins in January........

    1. It is, it is….I don’t know why I’ve never tried it before now!! I agree….no sugar and no calories during the holidays! See, you are a bad influence. I have a Starbucks within 3 miles of my house. So I can drink some at home and grab some on the way to the office! :-) I will worry about all the calories in January…with the new “eggnog free” diet! :-)

  7. Have never seen Christmas Vacation. I really do have to catch up on my Christmas movies! I broke an ornament last night and my kitty immediately walked through the broken glass! So according to how much eggnog you drank since Tuesday, you probably should not get on the scale tomorrow morning.....added weight shows up after 3 days!!

    1. You will love it...it is such a funny movie! Oh, I'm so sorry...hope your kitty is okay! They are like little babies and you have to watch every move they make! Yep, not going to be getting on the scales until next summer...after my extensive dieting program from winter to spring...LOL

  8. Thanks for the tips, Benita. I'm really bad, as much as I am an animal lover, that scene from Christmas Vacation really makes me laugh hard. Gulp!

I thought you meant Southern Comfort whiskey in your eggnog. And from Walmart?! Hubby brought some home from out local liquor store and he told me the alcohol was bourbon. I'm the beer and wine sort with a lemon drop martini or margarita thrown in here and there so I couldn't wrap my head around the stuff he bought. Maybe we will give it away! lol! Or I'll try your doctoring up idea of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. I can hold my nose and chug it like cough medicine and then sleep like a baby!! Ha!

    Happy Weekend!

    1. It makes me laugh too....I think it is hilarious...poor cat...LOL

No, the brand is Southern Comfort, although on the carton they do suggest using their brand of whiskey. Was the brand Evan Williams? I've seen it and heard that particular brand is wonderful, but has way too much alcohol in it for me. I read the label and got woozy-headed...LOL. I'm with you...a margarita and a wine spritzer is about as wild as I get! Hope you had a great weekend! Hugs!!

  9. By the time I got to the girl losing her finger, I laughed so hard my husband asked what was so funny. I said Chasing Quaintness is spreading Christmas cheer the hard way.

  10. Benita,
Any eggnog left now.... it's at least a day later? Just last night one of my cats knocked a saucer off the fireplace second floor ledge and it fell down to the first floor on top of a chest, breaking items and gouging marks into the top of the chest. Not a cat in sight...scattered like the wind.

    1. I bought more! So glad Walmart has a healthy supply! :-)

LOL..I bet they did! I know it's not funny, but animals seem to know when they've done something wrong...like small children. I bet they were all pointing at each other saying "she/he did it"...LOL

  11. Girl... you better get out your big girl pants if you keep sucking down that eggnog LOL! I'll buy 1 on Christmas eve and that's it! Too much of a good thing.. and I already have my big girl pants on ... I cut my hand on an ornament last year trying to stick a ball on a stick.. it was painful! A jagged cut because of the glass. I'm glad I didn't know about the strain of strep... now I'll worry about every cut my kids get. Thanks. My neighbors grandchild caught there garage on fire back in August. I just happen to be looking out the window and saw flames... called the fire dept. etc... turned out, he poured gas in the garage and struck a match. He's 5 years old, it's a wonder it didn't kill him. Anyway, no one was hurt but it's still a mess.
I hope you're enjoying your slide into Christmas. I have a little shopping left to do and 2 days of baking to do next week. Today. I'm. Resting. Hugs!

    1. LOL...I know it...I'm already feeling a pinch from all that eggnog! I wish I had never tasted that stuff...LOL AND now that I have a homemade recipe, which I hope to share on the blog next week, it is going to be a very slippery slope for me! I wanted to share the story about the cut so I wouldn't be the lone worrier. Honey, when that happened to her, I started carrying 2 containers of Neosporin with me every where I went, to put on every scrape or cut the kids ending up getting...I drove them nuts! LOL Man, it is a wonder....kids start quite a few fires, accidentally, of course, but it is a wonder more of them aren't hurt! I still have some shopping left to do and some baking to do...I hope to be able to catch up this weekend and relax some next week! Enjoy your R&R! Hugs!!
